Light is a wave. So, like ocean waves traveling through water, the ether was postulated as the medium through which light waves travel. But the Michelson-Morley experiment proved it didn’t exist, and subsequent analysis showed that when it comes to explaining the Universe the ether is about as useful as a DVD rewinder.
