A barn, apart from being a place to put your cows, is a very small unit of area used by physicists; it is equal to 10-24 centimeters squared. As a typical nuclear area, it really is as big as a barn compared to other areas involved. As one of the physicists at its invention no doubt observed, striking a uranium nucleus is as easy as hitting the broad side of a barn.
